How to Style a Mushroom Lamp: Bedside, Shelf and Desk
Share
The mushroom lamp has become one of the most recognisable shapes in interiors, and it's easy to see why. That rounded cap gives off a soft, diffused glow rather than a hard beam, and the silhouette looks just as good switched off. A mushroom lamp works in a Japandi bedroom, a colourful living room or a tiny rented flat. Here's how to make the most of one.
Choosing the right mushroom lamp
Start with where the lamp will live and how you'll use it.
- Bedside or sideboard: a medium-sized lamp with a glass shade gives the warmest glow. Our mushroom table lamp in cream comes with a glass shade in cream, white, pink or wine red (or a lighter plastic shade) and a UK plug.
- Desk or narrow shelf: choose something compact. The bud mushroom desk lamp has a small footprint and comes in pink, sky blue or burgundy.
- Anywhere without a socket: go cordless. The wooden mushroom night light in walnut or beech charges by USB and has a dimmable touch switch, so it can move around the house with you.
On a bedside table
A mushroom lamp is a natural bedside light because it's soft enough to read by without keeping you awake. Keep the arrangement simple: the lamp, one book and a small dish or ceramic trinket tray for rings. If your bedside table is small, place the lamp towards the back corner so the glow spreads across the wall behind it. For a symmetrical look, use a pair either side of the bed, or balance one lamp with a wall light on the other side.
On a bookshelf
Lamps on shelves create pools of light at eye level, which makes a room feel cosier than overhead lighting ever can. Place a mushroom lamp at the end of a row of books, or give it its own shelf with a small ceramic vase and a candle. A cordless lamp is ideal here because there's no cable to hide.
On a desk
A mushroom lamp is a mood light rather than a task light, so pair it with a brighter desk lamp if you work late. Where it shines is in softening a workspace in the evening: switch off the big light, leave the mushroom lamp on, and the desk turns back into part of your home.
In the living room and dining room
Try a mushroom lamp on a sideboard, a console table behind the sofa or a dining room shelf. Coloured glass shades in pink or wine red cast a warm, rosy glow that's flattering for dinner. Group it with ribbed glass candle holders for layered light at different heights.
Getting the light right
- Warm white is best: if your lamp takes a bulb, choose a warm white (around 2700K) for evenings.
- Layer your light: a mushroom lamp works best as one of two or three soft lights in a room, alongside a wall light or candles.
- Think about the wall behind: pale plaster or limewash reflects the glow beautifully.
- Mix materials: glass, ceramic, linen and wood all sit well alongside the rounded shape.
A mushroom lamp as a gift
Mushroom lamps make lovely Christmas gifts because they suit almost any style and every room needs softer light. The wooden night light is a thoughtful present for a child's room or a student, and the cream table lamp is a generous gift for her or for a new home.
